For the Record

I watch the Oscars. Every year.

I get mad when they give good (but not great) movies the best picture statue (um... hello Crash, Chicago...) I was happy this year. No Country deserved to win even if I had hoped that Schnabel would have won for diving Bell
but I mostly watch to love/hate all over how people look and what they are wearing.

This is what I thought of 2008:

Best in show:

- Katherine Hiegl (escada red/marilyn blond curls)

- Jennifer Garner ( black ruffles- de la renta and necklace-bling! stacked bangles-Bling! earrings-bling! def taking the more than one statement piece Vogue mantra seriously!)

- Marion Cotilliard (Galliano mermaid, wouldn't like that dress on anyone else- damn she's amazing)

- TIlda Swinton (Lanvin with giant silver cuff don't give a F*c! what everyone else says- she looked fab! Would have been a disaster on anyone else)

- Cate Blanchett (Dries van Noten- necklace/earrings combo and detailed hemline sold this)

- Miley Cyrus (red Valentino- age appropriate, glamorous, beautiful)

- Amy Adams (green Proenza Schouler- I knew as soon as I saw the bust-line)

- Julie Christie (dress by?? gloves-LV. Ahead of trend in a red-metallic foil that has been all over the f/w08 runways knee-length dress- looked half her age)

You looked great- who are you?

- Marketa Irglova (black dress by?? won for best original song with that other dude for Once)

- Suzie Templeton (bright red/orange cross-front halter by?? won for best animated short for Pete and the wolf with some other dude)

Also- why is it that women such as this looked great & were NOMINATED & WON but on ANY next-day oscar photo coverage nary a photo of these two lovely ladies on the red carpet can be found!! *sometimes I just hate celebrity

Great dress- WTF happened to your face?

- Cameron Diaz (Dior- seriously nude make-up with a nude dress, crap hair, overly tanned skin and bags under the eyes is NOT a good look)

-Nicole Kidman (Balenciaga- LAY OFF THE BOTOX WOMAN! YOU ARE PREGNANAT FOR GODSSAKE!!)

NO!NO!NO!

- anyone in Marchesa (Alba & Hathaway) the frilly-fussy busts were just in the way and Hathaway looked particularly ...gasp...chubby-esp in the arm

- Penelope Cruz (Chanel- normally an A+++ but I just hated the feathers at the bust, the drapped front at the waist was cumbersome and she just looked a bit...off)

- Diablo Coty (Dior leopard sheath can't rem but if it's true that she once worked as an exotic dancer this outfit made that seem believable)

- Rebecca Miller (christian Lacroix- um no. I preferred Uma's Lacroix peasant girl get-up a few years back to this- yeah I said that)

- Jennifer Hudson (Roberto Cavalli- white- her boobs looked really pushed-up and squished-in not flattering on her figure either. ALT I love you but....you're fired!)

More that I liked than disliked butbut the fashion was pretty boring!!! Lots of RED! and tons of grecian drapping!

There are gay jokes a plenty about the military and tom cruise, combine the two and you get Top Gun. The video is hilarious but doesn't even slightly deter my enjoyment of this movie (depite not being able to get almost any reference or allusion made to it)

2008

2007 ended on a high note- the successful crafting of paneer and a yummy rapini/spinach/roasted cashew curry from vij's cookbook.

2008 started with a throw back allout sweaty dance party with a few of my favorite people (and a few new friends) in snowy MTL.

So far, so good...

I did not know Jarvis Cocker was married. He and his wife do an interview in the Autumn ACNE Paper #5. Excerpt below:

Jarvis: I think stylists for bands should be illegal. The thing about a band, for me anyway, is that it isn't just to do with the music, it's to do with an attitude. The way a band looks has a lot to do with that. I expect a band to write their own songs, and I also expect them to dress themselves. I think it's cheating if you get someone else to do it for you. It just doesn't seem right to me. With Pulp we never had a uniform, it would have been physically impossible. We were never an elegant group.

I break with public opinion when it comes to Heroes Season 2, or I did until last night's episode.

What I like about Season 2:

• developing the abilities
• Elle
• Sark! er.... I mean Adam
• Getting some backstory on the company and especially Mrs. Petrelli's past (but I still have no idea what her and Kaito's abilities are)
• Clair and West (I know that this story line has been quite corny but I think it's quite reflective of highschool/first loves)
• The miseducation of Peter Petrelli (by the a fore mentioned Sark...er I mean, Adam)

The things that are putting a terrible crimp into my enjoyment of the show:

• Maya, I fucking hate this character. She's a naive moron and grates on every inch of my nerve and has since the very first moment I saw her onscreen. Beautiful girl, terrible character. Also completely unbelievable that she would just abandon her other half/brother for Sylar
• Mohinder. He may be pretty but he's also a naive moron to the extreme. I forgave him in season one for this but it seems that the character's sole purpose is to idiotically latch onto some corrupted belief and fight for that, usually in defiance and to the detriment of his own moralistic cause. It drives me insane how fucking beyond-stupid and easily manipulated the character is. Plus, he can't act.
• Niki/Mikha's storyline. Love the Granny but could care less about the copycat cousin. I really like Niki and Mikha but I couldn't care less about their storyline in this arc. It's just , yawn, SO BORING.

I'm on ther boderline with the Parkman storyline. I like that he's grappling with the invasiveness of his ability and how he is being manipulated and seduced by the power that it brings. But like with all the characters he too is obsessed with "doing the right thing" "being the hero" and "saving the world" and this ambition nearly always clouds his judgement, usually for the worse. Actually, I guess that would be my strongest complaint about the show in general. While I find this obsession in Hiro, the Patrelli's and Clair and Noah compelling, I can't stand it in Mohinder and it usually bothers me with Parkman. Also, why is it that the heroes can't seem to work together this year? Regardless, I'm in it for the long haul, so I'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Please just let Mohinder and Maya die and be gone. Please!!

Sometimes it seems she's the only model out there

I'm not saying she can't do it, or won't look great but for the past two years I have been on permanent Kate Moss overdrive. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of her face. I'm sick of her style. I'm sick of her boyfriend dramas. I'm sick of her blonde hair. She's the last of the supers that continue to consistently work and for that I am grateful but sometimes I just can't stand to look at her face.
